Wawayanda State Park
Before it became a state park in 1963, Wawayanda’s vast natural resources provided a source of income for the iron and logging industries. “
Wawayanda State Park: “I cannot say that Waywanda State Park is among my most favorite ones. True, it offers different and challenging hikes, terrain ranging from hilly to swampy and a large lake, the park is infested with weekend hikers, bike riders and horses. That’s right: a major portion of the park is open to horses.”
Wawayanda State Park Clear Sky Clock: “What is it?
At a glance, it shows when it will be cloudy or clear for up to the next two days. It’s a prediction of when Wawayanda State Park, NJ, will have good weather for astronomical observing.
Department of Environmental Protection: “The quiet charm of Wawayanda appeals to hikers, campers, swimmers and boaters. Forested hills surround Lake Wawayanda creating a restful backdrop for canoeists, boaters and fisherman, while steep mountains challenge casual as well as serious hikers. A twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park, while the top of Wawayanda Mountain offers sensational views. More than forty miles of trails are marked in the park.”

It’s a Jungle Out There
“The Jersey Jungle waits at Wawayanda State Park in Sussex County. As wild as its name, the land of ‘winding, winding water’ is home to Indian shelters and some of the best bear dens in NJ, a lake to swim and boat on, great gobs of pudding stone to climb, rock to scramble, ledges for leaping, primeval forest, 20 miles of Appalachian Trail and so much more. It’s a 16,679-acre garden-like jungle gym, a land of natural marvels and a dynamic showcase of human history. Its wildness survives us.”

This is a snowy meadow in Harriman State Park, first snow, December 2005.
This a photo of an old iron mining facility in Sterling Forest undergoing restoration.
We visited this site on a hike Fall 2005, when this photo was made, but Sterling Forest is along one of our regular traverses during the hike year and and we sometimes pass this this spot several times a year.
