Harriman Hikers January 2007 Update

January 2007: Happy New Year to Harriman Hikers; old friends and those people who have only just now found us on the internet!

Your webmaster and general-purpose hike cheerleader, Rich and the Harriman Hikers Hike Leaders, Ed and Greg have taken a temporary sabbatical for now from our regular monthly email newsletter to rest up from all the holiday swirl of social activities, enjoy some personal time and reflect on the coming year.

None of this will affect our regular Sunday hikes, which will continue as usual, every Sunday as they have for over 30 years. We’ll be at Parking Lot B-1, South Lots, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Mahwah, NJ 07430 each and every Sunday at 11:30, rain or shine itchin’ to hike and waitin’ for you to join us!

Greg and Ed are busy cooking up new hike routes for our fitness enjoyment during the coming year- dont miss a thing in 2007!

Ed plans to continue his once-a-month Saturday extra hikes (Ed’s January additional hike was on New Year’s Day)-

Stay tuned here on the Harriman Hikers website and join our email newsletter list by registering for news of other additional group activities coordinated by various members and friends of the group as well as occasional general and environmental news of interest to the outdoors and singles communities at-large.

In the coming weeks we hope to update the online photo album backlog of hiking pictures dating back to last summer. We’d like to thank every one who has graciously shared their photos from the hikes and reassure you that your efforts do not go unappreciated. Keep an eye on our photo albums for updates. If you have photos from our hikes you would like to share please attach them to an email and drop them to us at harrimanhikers@gmail.com or, better yet, upload them to your own online photo album and send us the url.

We hope that if you have only just discovered our group and are looking for an opportunity to get out the house into the great outdoors and make friends with other outdoor-minded singles that you will make some time on a Sunday soon and join us for an afternoon of hiking and fellowship in the closer-to-home-than-you-might-think wilderness wonderlands of the State Parks and Preserves of the southern Hudson Valley of New York State and northern New Jersey with their pristine woods, hills, valleys, lakes, rivers and vistas just waiting for you to savor for yourself.

As I sit at my computer and write on this Saturday afternoon in January, 2007, the weather outside is akin to springtime (shall we thank global warming for this?). The windows are thrown open, the sky is blue- it is, for all intents and purposes, a glorious day! The weather forecast for tomorrow is for a sunny day with highs in the 50′s- what better opportunity to spend a day outdoors!

We hope you will join us!

Ciao fer now-

Harriman Hikers News December 2006

Season’s Greetings to all:

Harriman Hikers is a New York-New Jersey singles hiking club. We meet every Sunday for hiking, rain or shine at 11:30 am at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, NJ in Parking Lot B-1 South. Complete details on our website, www.harrimanhikers.org

When we say we hike EVERY Sunday, we mean*EVERY* Sunday, just as we have for over 30 years!

Our Annual Sunday after Thanksgiving Hike/Feast was once again a BIG SUCCESS! We were very fortunate to have a simply gorgeous day on Sunday, Nov 26th, 2006 for the Annual Sunday after Thanksgiving Hike/Feast!

As is customary we made sure we got a group photo- see it on our homepage www.harrimanhikers.org. Eventually (along with the current backlog of hiking photos that need to get uploaded) we will add some photos from the Thanksgiving Hike to our photo gallery.

Dont be a shut-in this winter! Cold weather should not hamper you from getting out to stay fit, enjoying ALL of nature’s seasons, meeting new people- and being comfortably warm and dry doing it. Please have a read over our Harriman Hikers Guide to Winter and Cold Weather Hiking and join us in the great outdoors this winter!

In December, there are several events in addition to our regular Sunday hikes, planned privately by members and friends of Harriman Hikers, that may be of interest to you:

Hikers in good physical condition are welcome to join Ed’s hike. If you have hiked with the Harriman Hikers and can handle the usual 7-8 miles of hiking over hilly, rocky terrain in warm weather, then you are a likely candidate for Ed’s Saturday, December 23rd 2006 Hike. During cooler weather, but during daylight savings time, Ed’s hikes tend to be a bit more ambitious at times, but since we will be back on Eastern Standard Time in December, hours of daylight will dictate that Ed’s hike will be more akin in length to regular Harriman Hikers hikes of 7-8 miles.

Its the main event! Our tutti-frutti!

Yes folks, its our

SUNDAY-AFTER-THANKSGIVING-HIKE!

Every year
as far back as any of us can remember, on the Sunday following Thanksgiving, Harriman Hikers has held an easy hike with the intention sharing leftover (as well as specially prepared)
gastronomical goodies and the spirit of the holiday with other hiking friends
and family.

Traditionally, as if by magic, old friends tend to
materialize and join the hike for this special day. Turnouts of 50-60 people are
not unusual.

-Regular Meeting time 11:30 am. No fee is charged for this
hike.

-Expect a mild 3-5 mile hike to a wilderness shelter for several
hours of feasting and socializing.

-Bring Thanksgiving leftovers to
share. Dishes prepared especially for the hike are welcome as
well!

-Bring beverages of your choice to share.

-Family members, including children old enough to handle a 3-5 mile round trip hike are
welcome.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

***KEITH TAUMAN LEADING ADVANCED-HIKER CATSKILLS HIKE AUG 19***

This info from Keith Tauman, a regular HH hiker who will be leading an advanced-level Catskill Hike Saturday Aug. 19, 10:00 a.m:

“Thanks for the opportunity to post this hike to your members. I will give a description of the hike: For details on where we are meeting I need the individuals to contact me directly, not just show up at the meeting place. There are two reasons for this, first I need to know how many people are going to attend and arrange for enough cars as well. This hike will have 2 parking areas.

Catskill Hike Saturday Aug. 19, 10:00 a.m. This hike is for advanced hikers. We will be hiking the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail. This is one of the Catskills hardest trails and will be at a moderate pace with time for enjoying the views. Total distance will be around 11 miles with steep ascents and there may be some hand rock climbing. You will need 3 quarts of water, good hiking boots and lunch. We will be hiking between 2 different parking lots, there is a fee at one of the lots.

I need to know who’s coming because we need enough cars to transport everyone between the two parking lots. Please contact Keith at king_spadez@hotmail.com for further details. Include a phone number and best time to reach you, I will check my email daily.”

*UPDATE* Monday, August 14th, 2006*

Dear Friends,
The proposed dates of Sept. 9 & 16 were not convenient meeting dates for most folks. So, how about Saturday, Sept 23 or 30th. 0r Sunday Sept 24 or Oct 1? Or would a weekday evening (Wednesday, September 20 or 27) be better?

Thats about all the news for now… seems like plenty to keep everybody pretty busy for a bit?

Harriman Hikers Newsletter February 2006

Belated President’s Day Weekend, Groundhog Day and
Valentine’s Day greetings from Harriman Hikers!

***NEWS***

*Screwy Weather is Normal Weather*

We hope everyone is enjoying this (so far) balmiest,un-precipitative
(barring the Feb 12th blizzard!) winter we have seen in some years!
We would like to thank all of you that have come to join us hiking
in spite of it being sooo hot;-)

We would like to mention that, while our goal is to hike “every Sunday,
year-round, rain or shine”, we do like to exhibit a little
forethought, responsibility and common sense regarding our activities,
specifically, regarding our cancelling the Feb 12th hike.

A little rain never stopped us, and hiking while it is snowing would not be
inconceivable except for the fact that everyone has to actually get
to the hike safely and be able to return home afterward.

The Feb 12th blizzard happened to coincide with vehicle travel windows
associated with the hike, so we called the hike off. (“The Perfect Storm?” ;-) The roads were in very bad shape most of the day so we feel we
were prudent cancelling.

In the event in the future that we have severe weather possibly making
hiking(or getting to/from the hike) unfeasable or unsafe please check
the website early Sunday morning before you leave; we will always update
www.harrimanhikers.org
with relevant info regarding same.

If there is snowfall mid- to late-week, be sure to check the web site for
announcement of the possibility of a Saturday snow-shoe hike
get-together in addition to the regular Sunday hike.

***FREE SATURDAY HIKE IN MARCH***
Ed is planning a FREE Saturday Hike March 25th so please mark your
calendar. Please note that Ed’s Saturday Hikes are generally a little
more ambitious(10-12 miles) than our regular Sunday hikes, so
please be sure you are in shape! Usual meetup for Ed’s Saturday
Hikes are 10:00am sharp in the public far end of the Mason Jar
Restaurant on Rt. 202 just off Rt. 17 in Mahwah.

*New Hikes!*
If you have been hiking recently you will have noticed that we are
trying many new trails and routes- We plan to continue to add new
hikes, especially as the weather warms up into spring and weather
and trail conditions improve, offering us more opportunities to explore.

We are trying to figure out a way to keep an online hiking journal.
Something involving GPS and online maps free for public use might
be very kewl as long as it doesn’t take professional computer
programming skills to use. We welcome any ideas or suggestions-
please email us
harrimanhikers@gmail.com.

*Speaking of Ambitious Hikes…*
Steve has been talking up the most “ambitious” hike we have ever
heard of, organized by the THC, along the NY/MA border, in May,
29 miles in one day, overnight camping at the start point for an
early start. Sounds like he is going for it! If you are interested,
talk to Steve on a hike. Registration is limited and it would be safe
to say this hike would not be for anyone except the most serious
hiker in very good physical shape. Please note this hike is outside
our organization and does not affect our regular, intermediate
level (7-8 mile) Sunday hikes here in our area.

*YOUR News*

If you have news you would like to share with the group, please
email us at
harrimanhikers@gmail.com.
If appropriate and relevant, we will be happy to include your
announcement in our newsletter and/or on our website.

*New Pix*
We have some new hiking pictures on the website in the Photo Gallery
courtesy of regular photo contributor Doug Williams.
We would like thank Doug once again for sharing with us.

*Needed: Pictures of People in Odd Clothing;-)*

We still need some detail pictures of people in Winter hiking gear
to accompany publication of our Winter Hiking Tips article

Harriman_Hikers_Guide_to_Winter_Hiking

in Real Travel Adventures Ezine http://www.realtraveladventures.com/.
Between the weather and Rich going away all the time to go skiing
we may have to ‘dress up’ for this;-) If anyone is so inclined, take
pictures amongst yourselves of your gaiters, crampons, layers,
boots, toboggans, gloves, mittens, ear muffs, handwarmers and so
on and email us the pictures at harrimanhikers@gmail.com. If we use
your pictures we will make sure you get a photo credit.

We have lots of new pictures in the Harriman Hikers Photo Gallery:

From Greg & Steve’s trip up to Gene’s in New Hampshire in the late

Lake Placid.

As always, we encourage everyone to bring their cameras hiking and

If you have an outdoors photo project and you need a venue for your work,
please contact us and we will try to help you.

*RECENTLY HIKED/ NEW HIKES*

Last weekend we hiked the Tuxedo Mount Ivy Trail (TMI) from its
eastern starting point in Suffern, NY off Rt. 202 to Big Hill Shelter.
We have been to Big Hill Shelter in Harriman State Park many times in
the past, but never along this route (the most popular route has
traditionally been from St. John’s Church in the Wilderness on Lake
Welch Drive). We have many new and exciting hikes planned for 2006 so
dont miss a thing!

Conversely, we would like to remind everyone that we do NOT schedule
hike destinations. This means we cannot tell you exactly where we will
be hiking for a future Sunday. The decision where to hike is the Hike
Leader’s and the Hike Leader makes that decision the morning of the
hike with the group’s best interests in mind, taking into
consideration many factors, including weather and trail conditions,
size and abilities of the group and available parking at the
trailhead.

*RAMAPO COLLEGE STUDENTS AND STAFF HIKE FREE*

In exchange for the Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, NJ
graciously allowing us to meet in the B-1 Parking Lot, we are very
happy to waive our $6.00 fee for any RC Student or Staff that wishes
to hike with us. If you’re a Ramapo College Road Runner, we welcome
you!

*TALK TO THE HAND!*

We keep getting famous-er and famous-er! Our “Harriman Hikers Guide to
Winter and Cold Weather Hiking”
http://harrimanhikers.org/Harriman_Hikers_Guide_to_Winter_Hiking.pdf
has been accepted for publication in the internet outdoors e-zine Real
Travel Adventures http://www.realtraveladventures.com/ for next
October. RTA has asked for some photos to accompany the article, so start
coming dressed in your best gaiters and crampons!

In the meantime, please check out the Real Travel Adventures website-
there are some really great stories to read there.
http://www.realtraveladventures.com/

Do you like to write about the outdoors or all things hiking? If you
need an outlet for your creativity, please let us know, we would love
to help you get published.

…and don’t be surprised when you are on the trails and passing hikers
ask for your autograph! ;-)

Elvis has left the building.

*VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES!*

We have a request for volunteer(s) from a physical therapist who has a

Jennifer Lipins writes to us: “I met this girl who works for an
organization that is looking for outdoor-oriented people who can lead
hikes through the Grand Canyon. They need to have compassing skills,
etc., to teach the group. The leader in turn goes for free.”

interested in please contact us and we will pass along more details
and contact info. harrimanhikers@gmail.com

the group and more people that will want to check us out and hike with us.
If you know of an outdoors or singles website that might be
interested in exchanging links with us or that might want to list us
as a resource for singles hiking activities please let us know.

Harriman Hikers News November 19th, 2005

Hello Fellow Single Outdoors Persons:

This is the November edition of your favorite internet newsletter from
The Harriman Hikers.

***THANKSGIVING HIKE(S)***
We are fast approaching one of the highlights of The Harriman Hikers
year, the Annual Thanksgiving Hike. As is HH custom, Sunday November
27th (Sunday following Thanksgiving Day), we will once again commune
in the wilderness to eat up all those delicious leftovers and catch up
with one another.

The Thanksgiving Hike is normally very well attended and each year;
many friends (old and new) generally materialise, as if by magic, for
this event.

As always, the Thanksgiving Hike will be a FREE hike, and all family
members and friends are welcome to join us. The hike will be very
moderate; we’ll hike to a shelter and have a feast on the mountain.
Usual meeting time/place at Ramapo College (11:30am). In such case
that we have imminent foul weather afoot on the day of the hike, we
will post a notice regarding same on the website.

Please note that in our previous newsletter in October and on the
website the date given (11/26) for the hike was erroneous, the
>correct date for the Sunday following Thanksgiving is 11/27.

*** FREE HIKE FRI 11/25 LED BY ED BURDZY***
For all those of you that always wished there was an alternative to
going to the mall on Black Friday, HH is at your service! The
bacchanal is over, chunkster! Git your butt up out of that easy chair
and TAKE A HIKE! Ed will be leading a glorious fall hike Fri 11/25,
departing the usual alternate meeting place, (the public parking
adjacent to the Mason Jar Restaurant in Mahwah NJ) at 10:00am. Please
be on time, the days are getting short. Call Ed 973-471-0492 for more
info.
What better way to work off all those extra Turkey Day calories than a hike?!

FYI~ Ed leads many extracurricular hikes falling on or near holidays
all year long. !Ed’s hikes are ALWAYS FREE.

***OTHER HOLIDAY HIKES***
Christmas Day and New Years Day both fall on Sundays this year. Ya
think some silly holidays stop HH??? NO WAY JOSE!
Rain or shine, you can depend on Harriman Hikers to be there for you
every Sunday at 11:30 am at the parking lot at Ramapo College. The
only thanks the hike Leaders ask for is for some friendly faces to
hike with them (ok, the $6 bucks a head helps;-). You wont find a more
reliable group that is as consistent and dependable about hiking on a
regular basis. Get off your duff and hike!

***WE’RE FAMOUS!***
Wendy Baumgardner, About.com’s (http://www.about.com) Walking Guide
profiled us for her weekly hiking and walking column:

Makes sense- We ARE a >pretty interesting bunch aren’t we?

***NEW PHOTOS***
Doug Williams was kind enough to send us some photos from his
collection of hiking pictures which we uploaded to the photo album.
Thanks Doug!
Some recent photographs from our hikes to Sterling Forest, The Pingyp
and this past Sunday’s hike to Ramapo Reservation have been added to
the Photo Album as well.
>>>See it all here: http://harrimanhikers.org/index.php?name=coppermine
We welcome hike pictures and encourage all to photograph the wonderful
world of nature we are so very fortunate to encounter each week as we
make our way thru the woods. If you have some hike photos you’d like
to share please email us at harrimanhikers@gmail.com

***OTHER HAPP’NINGS***
(Note: The following events do not directly involve the Harriman
Hikers as a club but they may be of interest to you outside the group)

Bob Gawel will lead his annual Christmas Hike to Doodletown from Bear
Mountain followed by dinner Richie’s Little Place in Ft. Montgomery on
Saturday Dec 10th. The hike is FREE but >>>for dinner there is a
charge involved and reservations need to be made<<< Complete details

Cross-Country Skiing
Some of us cross-country ski as well as hike. Rich Hobbs is, (while
not neccesarily all that talented or adept;-), an avid cross-country
skier nonetheless. Rich is planning to ski at least one day a weekend
just about anytime we get enough snow to do so this winter, and once
there is snow in the New Paltz area (Minnewaska, Mohonk and other
local higher-elevation areas) should be headed there pretty regularly
on the weekends. May be interested in organizing out of town ski trips
with like minds as well. FYI The Garden State Ski Club
http://www.gardenstateskiclub.com, Mid-Hudson XCSki Society
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mhxcss/ as well as a number of other ski
clubs in the area offer opportunities too. Anyone interested in
impromptu cross-country skiing get togethers please contact Rich
rrhobbs@gmail.com.

***WE’LL HELP!***
If you have an event of possible interest to the group (or even just
an idea) contact us and (if appropriate) we will help you announce and
promote it. Email harrimanhikers@gmail.com

That’s all for now- HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
