Early Fall Color – Ramapo Reservation, NJ

It’s late September and the leaves are just starting to change here in north New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley in New York State. Fall officially began on Monday, September 22, 2008, at 11:44:16 EDT (15:44:16 UCT) and in a matter of weeks going forward, the foliage in our part of the country will peak to its show of brilliant Autumn colors everywhere, before the Winter fallow period begins shortly afterward. A little like people on Saturday night! ;)

Notice how the bright Fall colors are still mixed with the remaining lush Summer greenery. Interesting time of year, no?

This post also serves to highlight the fact that while Harriman Hikers most frequently hikes its namesake, Harriman State Park, NY, we also hike in other wilderness parks and reserves / preserves in the area, such as Ramapo Reservation, a Bergen County Park, located a short distance from our weekly meetup at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, NJ.

Step Into 2007 Additional Hike

Drag yer hung-over-New-Years-Day-self out from under that coffee table, put on the hiking boots and start working on a New Year Resolution: “Get more exersize and stay fit- go hiking!”:

The following hike is in addition-to and does not replace or affect Harriman Hikers regular Sunday Hike. Harriman Hikers meets every Sunday for hiking, rain or shine, year-round, as we have for over 30 years.

The following hike is coordinated privately by Harriman Hikers Hike Leader, Ed Burdzy. Please contact Ed by phone 973-471-0492 for questions or more info about this hike.

Ed Burdzy will lead a hike on Monday, Jan 1st, 2007. Destination to be determined by Ed, day of hike.

Meetup for Ed’s hike on Monday, Jan 1st, 2007 is as usual for “Ed Hikes”, 10am in the south (public) end of the parking lot at the Mason Jar Restaurant on Route 202 in Mahwah, NJ.
Map

Hikers in good physical condition are welcome to join Ed’s hike. If you have hiked with the Harriman Hikers and can handle the usual 7-8 miles of hiking over hilly, rocky terrain in warm weather, then you are a likely candidate for Ed’s Monday, Jan 1st, 2007 Hike.

During cooler weather, but during daylight savings time, Ed’s hikes tend to be a bit more ambitious at times, but since we will be back on Eastern Standard Time in December, hours of daylight will dictate that Ed’s hike will be more akin in length to regular Harriman Hikers hikes of 7-8 miles.

Contact Ed Burdzy 973-471-0492 for questions and more info.

Harriman Hikers Newsletter- August 2006- SO MUCH going on!

Greetings from the Harriman Hikers!

Please keep an eye on our website www.harrimanhikers.org for announcements and news about Harriman Hikers Sunday Hikes and additional events! (additional events never affect or replace Harriman Hikers regular Sunday Hikes)

We hope everybody is enjoying their summer- It’s been a scorcher at times- periodic lake dips surely have been a welcome respite in addition to the trails and forests in our area we are so fortunate to enjoy all year-round.

As we gradually move into Fall there will be LOTS of activities going on of interest to those of us in the outdoors and singles communities:

  • Harriman Hikers meets for hiking each and every Sunday, year-round, rain or shine. Yes, EVERY Sunday!
  • Additional Events (below) (additional events never affect or replace Harriman Hikers regular Sunday Hikes)

*** HIKE LABOR DAY MONDAY SEPT 4TH ***

Firstly, an announcement that Ed Burdzy will lead an additional hike on Labor Day, Monday Sept. 4th.

Please note, Ed’s hike is in *addition to*, (and does not replace) the regular, weekly Harriman Hikers Sunday Hike which will take place on Sunday, September 3rd.

–> Harriman Hikers meets *every* Sunday, year-round, rain or shine for hiking, just as the group has been doing for over 30 years. If you are new to the group, please surf over to our website, www.harrimanhikers.org for complete details about Harriman Hikers.

Meetup for Ed’s hike on Monday Sept. 4th is as usual for “Ed Hikes”, 10am in the south (public) end of the parking lot at the Mason Jar Restaurant on Route 202 in Mahwah, NJ.

Map

Hikers in good physical condition are welcome to join Ed’s hike. If you have hiked with the Harriman Hikers and can handle the usual 7-8 miles of hiking over hilly, rocky terrain in warm weather, then you should be fine for Ed’s Labor Day Hike. During cooler weather, Ed’s hikes tend to be a bit more ambitious at times, but Ed has stated he is scaling back for now to just slightly less rigorous hikes with considerations toward the hot, muggy summer weather. Be sure and bring a swimsuit, Ed and his companions have been known to “fall into” ;-) lakes along the trail! OOPS!

Contact Ed Burdzy 973-471-0492 for info or questions.

***KEITH TAUMAN LEADING ADVANCED-HIKER CATSKILLS HIKE AUG 19***

This info from Keith Tauman, a regular HH hiker who will be leading an advanced-level Catskill Hike Saturday Aug. 19, 10:00 a.m:

“Thanks for the opportunity to post this hike to your members. I will give a description of the hike: For details on where we are meeting I need the individuals to contact me directly, not just show up at the meeting place. There are two reasons for this, first I need to know how many people are going to attend and arrange for enough cars as well. This hike will have 2 parking areas.

Catskill Hike Saturday Aug. 19, 10:00 a.m. This hike is for advanced hikers. We will be hiking the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail. This is one of the Catskills hardest trails and will be at a moderate pace with time for enjoying the views. Total distance will be around 11 miles with steep ascents and there may be some hand rock climbing. You will need 3 quarts of water, good hiking boots and lunch. We will be hiking between 2 different parking lots, there is a fee at one of the lots.

I need to know who’s coming because we need enough cars to transport everyone between the two parking lots. Please contact Keith at king_spadez@hotmail.com for further details. Include a phone number and best time to reach you, I will check my email daily.”

Dear Friends,
The proposed dates of Sept. 9 & 16 were not convenient meeting dates for most folks. So, how about Saturday, Sept 23 or 30th. 0r Sunday Sept 24 or Oct 1? Or would a weekday evening (Wednesday, September 20 or 27) be better?

Thats about all the news for now… seems like plenty to keep everybody pretty busy for a bit?

If you have an outdoors/singles event you would like to organize or one you know of you would like to share with the group, please contact us at harrimanhikers@gmail.com.

Please note, however, that announcements are made only, and we may accept, or refuse, requests for announcements at our sole discretion.
