Check Out Our Post Maps

“Check out our Post-Maps!” …huh? What’s THAT?

The page above contains digital Google Maps .

These maps contain map-pins map-pin-marker-red map-pin-marker-blue that represent geographic locations relevant to posts on Harriman Hikers that have been geotagged, or in other words, have geospatial data embedded that indicate the location where events or other information described in the post took place.

The top map is a post map of all the geotagged posts on the Harriman Hikers website. If you click on any marker, a message balloon will appear containing the titles of posts for that location and link(s) to the actual article(s).

The lower map, via our RSS Feed (Wikipedia definition), which by the way, is geospatially sensitive (so DON’T upset it ;-) , is populated with pins for only the most recent articles published that have been geotagged. If you click on the message balloon(s) you will be returned a result that contains the article’s title and a link back to our site as well as a link to Harriman Hiker’s Google Maps Profile.

All this is part of what has come to be known as neogeography – or… “new geography”. Kinda like “new math” only, instead of “math”, “maps”. Get it?

Needless to say, you may see a number of maps on Harriman Hikers – the one below has been tagged with our weekly meeting place at Parking Lot B-1, South Lots at Ramapo College:

If you zoom in close enough you can nearly see gum wrappers in the parking lot (they’re not ours! ;-) .

Note – if either of the two maps above don’t seem to be displaying correctly, the likely problem is you are using the Internet Explorer Browser, which is non-compliant in many ways to standards established and used by other popular web browsers. Try Firefox instead.

Photos can be geotagged, too. Below are the results of our Flickr Feed of our website header photos – if you look below, the link for each item in the feed (i.e. Pine Meadow Lake, Harriman State Park, NY) places said photo on a map on a site called loc.alize.us.

Sites like loc.alize.us are known as mashups and it’s sort of a prerequisite for a mashup site or Web.20 site to have an unusual name like “loc.alize.us” (…or Flickr ;-)

Both of our Hike Leaders, Ed and Greg, use GPS units to navigate the trails we use on our hikes. These units utilize much of the same type of data as described above.

If you are still reading this, you might also be interesting in seeing our Mapufacture Map.

Website Upgrade

Well, it was “time”…

The old website just sort of gave up the ghost. Time to put the ol’ hoss out to pasture.

I’m gettin’ all misty…

In any case, we got a great run out of our old website – it was using much of the same code it was originally built with in 2004… which in internet years places its birth in a range that to us would be somewhere between the Jurrassic and Paleozoic Periods!

Alas, it was starting to be held together with duct tape and Elmer’s Glue and it had a bad hip…

Somebody wrote to us and said it had started emailing out old posts!

We are very excited about the new site! We are very fortunate we have been able to retain the content that we feel is most important and in choosing the WordPress site platform, we have lots of room to grow with the web in the years to come.

We hope you like it and are as excited as we are!

p.s. those of you that read the blog please be advised it has been integrated into the main website- all the old posts are here (hint: use the tags, search box (on the sidebar of most pages) or run thru the sitemap to find what you are looking for) and new blog posts will be posted and appropriately tagged right here on the main website.

Holiday Hike Dec 23

Harriman Hikers would like to say “thank you” to everyone who has come out to join the group during the year!

The $6 Hike Fee will be waived for the Sunday, Dec 23rd Hike. (Ramapo College Students and Staff hike free EVERY week).

In the spirit of fun, this is likely the most appropriate hike to wear that fake-reindeer-antler-cap, Rudolph nose, elf ears, Santa cap or probably just about any type of goofy took / toboggan.

As every week, but with possible additional considerations toward the holiday season, hikers are encouraged, optionally and at each person’s own expense, to get together socially after the hike. Hint: bring cash! it makes it easier to divvy up the tab

Informal, apres-hike social gatherings are always additional and optional to the Sunday hike itself and never affect or replace the hike in any way.

Mahwah Bar and Grill (MBG) MAP is an “unofficial”, yet popular, casual and reasonably-priced venue close to Ramapo College where many hikers are likely to be found after the hike.

If you can’t make the hike that day but wish to meet up afterward, fyi the group is generally back at the Ramapo College Parking Lot B-1, South Lots (where we meet up before carpooling to the trail head) this time of year sometime around 5:00pm.

Thanksgiving Hike Sunday November 25th, 2007

Our Sunday-After-Thanksgiving Hike is always one of the highlights of our year!Every year as far back as any of us can remember, on the Sunday following Thanksgiving, Harriman Hikers has held an easy hike with the intention sharing leftovers (as well as specially prepared dishes) and the spirit of the holiday with other hiking friends and family.

Traditionally, as if by magic, old hiking friends materialize to join us for this special day. Turnouts of 50-60 people are not unusual.

Just follow this easy recipe:

-Regular Meeting time 11:30 am. No fee is charged for this hike.

-Expect a mild 3-5 mile hike to a wilderness shelter for several hours of feasting and socializing.

-Bring Thanksgiving leftovers to share. Dishes prepared especially for the hike are welcome as well!

-Bring beverages of your choice to share.

-Family members, including children old enough to handle a 3-5 mile round trip hike are welcome.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Additional Event: Mohonk Day Trip Sat Oct 27

Rock Scrambling Challenge* and Dinner @ Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY, Saturday October 27th!

!!!—> UPDATE THURSDAY 10/25/07- MOHONK DAY TRIP IS CANCELLED DUE TO FORECAST WET WEATHER- IF YOU ARE REGISTERED BE SURE AND CALL MOHONK AND CANCEL SO YOU DONT GET CHARGED!- PHYLLIS

Join your host, Phyllis, for a challenging, fun filled day boulder scrambling thru the famous Mohonk Labyrinth*, a short trek up to the Sky Top Monument; Victorian-Era-style High Tea from 3-4pm, then a dinner festival buffet at 6:30 pm.
Hike/Rock Scramble*: The rock scramble is very challenging*. There are several first-half bail out locations where you can get on a trail and easily meet the group up at the monument. It is not recommended to continue on to the end (very narrow, stair case, lemon squeeze up a crevice), unless you are pretty fit and not particularly afraid of heights. This hand over hand rock scramble is dangerous and doing this is at your own risk. No beginners please*.

Note from Phyllis’ recent experience:
“The labyrinth was much more challenging than I remembered, a little scary, but… so exhilarating and totally worth it when you get to the top. It’s really very cool! You can check out my pics!”

A light back pack or fanny pack would be best gear for easier maneuvering thru the rock scramble. DO NOT PACK ANYTHING HEAVY!

Please wear hiking boots and bring some sort of gloves to protect your hands, you will be encountering rugged terrain. Long pants and a long sleeved shirt are recommended and may be seasonally appropriate. If the weather is cool a number of light layers in lieu of a heavy, bulky coat is recommended. Otherwise, no specialised rock climbing gear is required.

Please come nutritionally prepared for the hike day- best to eat a hearty breakfast and pack a light lunch on your own before the morning meetup. We will stop to eat lunch somewhere along the trail in the early afternoon and then possibly tea & snack late day before dinner, however, due to time constraints, there will not be an opportunity to stop for breakfast or shop for your lunch after the morning meetup on the way to Mohonk.

* In lieu of the Labrynth, there are other walking trails up to the monument if you don’t want to rock scramble- Phyllis

Dinner @ Mohonk Mountain House:
Dinner time: 6:30pm Seating
Attire: resort casual …meaning… collar shirt, nice jeans & sneakers are ok, but no shorts or t-shirts please. Lockers may be available near the pool spa area, there are also bathrooms to change in or you could probably arrange to leave your changing bag in the car you came in until needed.

Fees and Reservations: Fee is $61.50, which covers the $20 Mohonk Mountain House day guest charge and dinner with non-alcoholic beverages (Alcoholic beverages can be purchased separately at dinner), dinner tax and tip included. For your safety and that of others, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

See www.mohonk.com for a complete buffet menu.

IMPORTANT- IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON ATTENDING, PLEASE CALL (Phyllis)
973-981-6310 OR E-MAIL myrealtorps@optonline.net. GROUP SIZE IS LIMITED
, RSVP IS REQUIRED

Call Mohonk Mountain House Dining Reservations @ 845-256-2056 to prepay and get a confirmation #. Let them know you‘ll be with the Sacchi/Harriman Hikers dinner group.

You must prepay your way with a charge card no later than Oct 7th (because it is peak foliage season & reservations go quickly, reserving by end of Sept would be best).

RAIN CANCELS- there is a Mohonk Mountain House 24hr cancellation policy if necessary.

Thanksgiving Hike Sunday November 25th, 2007

Our Sunday-After-Thanksgiving Hike is always one of the highlights of our year!

Every year as far back as any of us can remember, on the Sunday following Thanksgiving, Harriman Hikers has held an easy hike with the intention sharing leftovers (as well as specially prepared dishes) and the spirit of the holiday with other hiking friends and family.
