Excerpted: “A simple walk in the woods reveals the Hudson’s history as a source of natural riches. Mianus River Gorge and Pawling Nature Preserve trails traverse wooded land never again to be farmed or logged. Trails at both places go through second-growth hardwoods and hemlock”cathedrals.” But the scarred earth on the Bull Hill hike, the result of quarrying, reminds the hiker that rocks don’t grow back. Osborne Preserve offers river views, lush forests and plant life diverse enough to include cactus. The western Hudson Valley is another great epicenter for hiking: hikers throng to Harriman State Park and Surebridge Mountain.”
Just a friendly reminder that this weekend, October 28-29, we end Daylight Saving Time for this year. We’ll still meet at our regular time, it’s just that it will be 11:30 Standard Time this time! Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour and enjoy an extra hour’s sleep if you can. If you don’t, you may find yourself waiting it the parking lot for an extra hour until the rest of us show up!
With the loss of daylight at the end of the hikes, we will try to compensate by paying extra attention to leaving the college lot as soon as possible after 11:30. Try to be prompt and not hold us all up by straggling in late!
-Greg.

Not sure how much this has to do specifically with hiking but we can all use whatever help we can get in this area of our lives!
Now is the time of year when the pharma companies ship their flu vaccines. The upcoming cold winter months are normally flu season.
So what do you want to do this year?
-Spend 2 miserable weeks flat on your back like you do each year?
OR
-Spend an hour or two to get a flu shot? (…and be well enough to hike those two weeks;-)
Here is a great website with lots of listings for flu shot clinics:

By RICH BEATTIE
“IT was dusk when the hikers grabbed backpacks and water bottles and headed into the woods of Cheyenne Canyon, outside Colorado Springs. With darkness closing in, the hikers, most in their 40′s and wearing sturdy boots, forged ahead, some not even bothering to turn on flashlights. As the sun’s last light faded, a bright full moon was growing ever more clearly defined against the darkening sky.”
