Harriman Hikers is very saddened to announce the passing of Eugene Doleschal, Harriman Hikers Hike Leader Emeritus. Gene passed away Friday morning October 23, 2009 in Portland, ME following a brief illness.
Following his departure from the northern New Jersey / lower Hudson Valley area, Gene continued to stay in touch with us via email, phone and personal visits.
While Hike Leader for Harriman Hikers, Gene was responsible of initiating and maintaining our continuing policy and schedule of hiking “every Sunday, rain or shine”. Gene’s devotion to hiking, fitness, Harriman Hikers and the outdoors singles community at-large has been responsible for countless friendships and romances (including marriages!) as well as the overall better health and fitness of many who have participated in Harriman Hikers over the years.

Update 11/2/2009: A wonderful memorial service was held on a gorgeous Fall afternoon for Harriman Hikers Hike Leader Emeritus, Gene Doleschal on Sunday, November 1st, 2009 at St. John’s Church in the Wilderness, in Harriman State Park, Stony Point, NY. In attendance were Gene’s family, who planned the event, as well as many of Gene’s friends, including a number of Harriman Hikers.
Although many of you are already aware, for those of you who are not, we wanted to share the very tragic news that our father, Gene Doleschal, passed away this past Friday, October 23rd, 2009. His death was very sudden and unexpected.
A service in Gene’s memory has been arranged as follows:

Please note that while we strongly encourage anyone who knew Gene personally (all friends of Harriman Hikers are welcome) to attend his service, this event does not affect or replace Harriman Hikers regularly scheduled Sunday Hike. Harriman Hikers will have a hike Sunday, November 1st just as Gene did for some 20 years.
This is your Founding Father speaking. Although it is still winter up here, I started my 2007 hiking season in the mountains and thought you might be interested in a few pictures. The first 3 are just a few hours old as I write.
Picture 3:Harriman State Park was never like this! The view is also from the Square Ledge, but taken at full zoom. To the top left is the Lion Head again and top center is Mt. Washington obscured by clouds.
The fourth is a view of the Crawford Notch still in its winter dressing from Mt. Willard (Doug and Elizabeth: you were there!).
